Fleas are no fun, for people or for pups. If your four legged friend brings fleas into your home, it’s even less fun. So what can you do? How do you get rid of these annoying pests?

Step 1: Treat your Pet

The first step is to treat your pet for fleas, and prevent your pet from bringing any more into your home. To do this, try using a fast acting oral treatment like Capstar or Revolution. Once that’s done, you might want to try a longer acting, more ongoing flea preventative treatment. Touch base with your veterinarian to find the best solution for you and your pet.

Step 2: Kill the Fleas in Your Home and Yard

To start, you’ll want to do a through cleaning of your home. Sweep tile and wood floors, and use a vacuum to take care of furniture, carpets, and rugs. When that’s complete, you’ll be able to move on to the next step, which is to use a flea carpet spray or powder. Thoroughly treat all upholstery and carpeted areas in your home. You’ll also want to spray your yard to kill fleas outside before they get carried in with you on your clothes, pet, or shoes. If that doesn’t take care of the problem, you’ll have to move on to the next step.

Step 3: Fog your House

If you’ve reached this step and are still willing to try some DIY options, you might want to consider fogging your house. Any fogger you get should last at least 7 months in order to kill all life stages of the flea. Depending on how large your home is, you might need more than one fogger. Of course, you and your pet will want to be out of the house for this process, and you’ll want to follow the fogger manufacturers instructions carefully to prep your home and keep food prep surfaces and edible items safe.
