Both subterranean and drywood termites cause damage to homes in Florida, with the dampwood variety also being common in the southern and central regions. However, dampwood termites cause less damage than drywood and subterranean termites because of their high moisture requirements.
Several species that are not active in any other parts of America have set up home here in Florida. These include:
- The Nose Termite, which comes from the Caribbean. It was first discovered in Florida in 2001.
- The Asian Subterranean Termite, which comes from Southeast Asia.
- Florida Dampwood Termite, which as its name suggests, is only found here. There are 3 different species.
- Formosan Termites are extremely active in Florida.
Because the ‘sunshine state’ is humid and warm, termites swarm all year round. According to TIP (Termite Infestation Probability) Zones, Florida is in the #1 zone (very heavy), meaning that the potential for damage is seen as significant. Regions with a high probability of activity need more stringent control measures in order to meet code building standards for new homes than regions where activity is lower.
