Ants are a nuisance when they are outdoors, but when they come into your home, they are a real problem. No one wants to see ants parading around their home. Unfortunately if you see even just a few ants in your home, it’s likely that there are hundreds more that you can’t see.

These pests are such a nuisance, so people have put a lot of effort into figuring out how to get rid of ants and as a result have created quite a few myths involving ways to get rid of them. One popular myth is that if you take a shovel of dirt from one ant mound and put it on top of another, the ants will fight and kill each other, destroying both colonies. This is incorrect; in fact, neighboring fire ant colonies have been known to share food and cooperate. Another popular myth is that putting grits on an ant mound will kill the colony because they will take the grits to their queen, who eats the grits, which expand in her stomach and cause her to burst. The reason both these methods appear to work is because when an ant mound is disturbed, the ants will often abandon that mound and build another several feet away. It take the ants a few months to build a new mound, and the lack of activity at the old mound fools people into believing that they have gotten rid of the ants.
