Personal Fragrances

Bugs have highly developed senses of smell, much more so than any human. So, while you may want to use a perfume or scented soap, you may be better off without the added fragrance. Stick to deodorants, soaps, and lotions that are unscented to minimize bug bites.

Clothing

If you are going to be outside, plan your clothing accordingly. Even in the summer heat, wearing long sleeves in a breathable fabric is a great defense against ticks. Non-flying insects will first go for your feet and ankles, so closed-toe shoes are your best bet. Light colors are best not only for beating the heat, but they are also best to keep insects away. As we said before, laundry detergents and fabric softeners should be unscented to keep the bugs under control.

One final thing to consider is the state of your lawn and garden. One of the best ways to control the population of bugs in your yard is to keep your lawn well-manicured and your flower beds trimmed and tidy. Also minimize any areas of standing water. This means making sure that rainwater can flow freely through your gutters and out of the yard. If there is any standing water after a rain, consider grading the yard to allow better flow. Regularly drain rain barrels or bird baths.
