Summer is here, and that means it is time for backyard barbecues, swimming in the pool, mowing the lawn, and generally enjoying the outdoors. But how can you enjoy it when you are constantly getting bit by pesky bugs? With summer heat comes mosquitoes, fire ants, flies, and all sorts of other bugs. Read on for some tips to prevent bug bites this summer.
Repellent
First, and most obvious, way to prevent bug bites would be to use bug repellent. There are a host of commercially available bug sprays on the market to choose from. However, not everyone can use these whether due to allergies or a desire to avoid certain chemicals. You can also use citronella candles or spirals. These do not repel bugs so much as they mask the smell of humans making it harder for the bugs to find you. Additionally, you can plant flowers that repel bugs. Chrysanthemum is known to repel flies, gnats, and midges. Many bugs and other pests detest the smell of herbs such as mint, rosemary, or basil.
Personal Fragrances
Bugs have highly developed senses of smell, much more so than any human. So, while you may want to use a perfume or scented soap, you may be better off without the added fragrance. Stick to deodorants, soaps, and lotions that are unscented to minimize bug bites.
Clothing
If you are going to be outside, plan your clothing accordingly. Even in the summer heat, wearing long sleeves in a breathable fabric is a great defense against ticks. Non-flying insects will first go for your feet and ankles, so closed-toe shoes are your best bet. Light colors are best not only for beating the heat, but they are also best to keep insects away. As we said before, laundry detergents and fabric softeners should be unscented to keep the bugs under control.
Lawn Care
One final thing to consider is the state of your lawn and garden. One of the best ways to control the population of bugs in your yard is to keep your lawn well-manicured and your flower beds trimmed and tidy. Also minimize any areas of standing water. This means making sure that rainwater can flow freely through your gutters and out of the yard. If there is any standing water after a rain, consider grading the yard to allow better flow. Regularly drain rain barrels or bird baths.
