If you own a home, hearing the word “termites” is probably one of your worst nightmares. However, there are a few signs of termite damage that you can watch out for to catch a termite problem before it gets out of hand.

  • Mud Tubes. Some termites will build small tubes out of mud on a home’s surface to use for moisture and transportation purposes as they scavenge for food. If you notice any of these tubes on your home’s walls or foundation, double check that extra firewood, mulch, or wood chips are being stored far away from your home.
  • Hollow Wood. In many cases, termites feed on the interior of wood, rather than on its surface. If you tap on some wood and it sounds hollow, but the wood looks unaffected on the surface, it could be a sign that you have a termite problem.
  • Cracked Paint. Termites can often get into your home’s interior structure through small cracks that are no bigger than the edge of a dime. If termites have started to do this in your home, the paint on your walls may start to look cracked or distorted in certain places.
  • Discarded Wings. Termites are known for shedding their wings on a regular basis.
